Cooked fava/broad beans with chickpeas, lemon and evoo + a side of boiled eggs - 'Ful mudammas'

Updated: Mar 19, 2023

A popular middle eastern breakfast dish and surprisingly easy to make. This dish features broad beans/fava beans and chickpeas, garlic, lemon and extra virgin olive oil. I've added some fresh vegetables and boiled eggs as a side to make it satisfying for breakfast. I enjoyed watching my dad make this recipe growing up, particularly when I got to eat it. I think I say that about every recipe, but there's just so much flavour in middle eastern food so it's hard not to love everything!

You can't go wrong with lemon, garlic and extra virgin olive oil - if you're out of dressing or flavouring ideas, stick to these 3 and you won't be disappointed. In this dish, after cooking the beans and softening them with some water on the stove top, you then place them into a mortar or in a bowl with some cooked garlic, lemon and oil and mash them together. It's as simple as that. Traditionally, this is served with some mint, radish and lebanese bread and eaten on its own. You can also serve it as a side to a breakfast spread.
